Stoke Newington Area Guide

Stoke Newington, more commonly known as ‘Stokey’, is in the London Borough of Hackney and with it being so close to the city, you would expect it to be very busy and overwhelming, but it has kept a village feel due to its historic core on Church Street. It is home to plenty of young families, hipster types and is very multicultural area with lots of different communities. Originally known as “new town in the wood”, it had the largest community of Quakers at one point, with a meeting house being built in Park Street, now called Yoakley Road.

It has had a major face-lift in the past years and has been based around Church Street, so you will find lots of independent shops, cafes, bars and pubs there. There is also a bustling Organic farmers’ market in the churchyard of St Paul’s Church that happens every Saturday morning. It was the first of its kind in the UK to have only biodynamic and organic producers.

If you’re after a bit of down time, the main green space in Stoke Newington is Clissold Park. Within the boundaries there is: a café, an animal and bird sanctuary, an adventure playground, organic food growing area, tennis courts, a table tennis table and in the summer months there is a large paddling pool. If you want some more trees to walk through, there is also a woodland park with a nature reserve at Abney Park Cemetery which boasts of guided nature walks.

Travelling around Stoke Newington couldn’t be easier with two stations close-by, Dalston Junction and Dalston Kingsland. There are many buses that go to the city centre and surrounding areas, with some even being 24 hours. Stansted Airport is less than 45 minutes away so perfect if you want to get away for the weekend!
