Islington Area Guide

Islington is in the London Borough of Islington and is just a 10-minute tube ride away from the City. Islington was and is peculiar in the sense that the village church, St Mary’s, is located some way off on Upper Street and not on the High Street as is tradition. However that doesn’t stop Islington from being noted for its fashionable vibe, independent boutique shops, restaurants, cafes and a bustling night life with bars and a few clubs. The area also boasts several Theatres where you’ll find drama, dance and music. The iconic Emirates Stadium in Highbury is home to Arsenal FC.

Elegant Georgian squares are dotted about in Islington, most famously being Arlington Square, which has a grade II listing, these are beautifully finished with trees, flowerbeds and a grass area. Over in Canonbury, there is the New River walk which features a pretty waterfall and a man-made park along the New River and has a couple of pubs along the way that you can stop at and have a drink whilst admiring the views. It isn’t hard to forget that you are close to the city with this, Angel also has a pleasant stretch of the canal. If you want something a bit more local and less water, you can head on over to Highbury Fields, a series of parks, greens and garden squares on offer. Surrounding the Highbury Fields, there are late-Victorian houses that are always a delight to visit and there are also early-Victorian houses in Canonbury. To view classic Georgian townhouses, you’ll need to head to Angel where you’ll be spoilt for choice.

In Islington there are 2 underground stations: Highbury & Islington which serves the Victoria line and Angel which is on the Northern line. Rail stations include the following: Finsbury Park, Drayton Park, Highbury & Islington and Essex Road. Nearby is St Pancras which provides high-speed travel to the rest of Europe, very handy if you want a ‘cheeky’ weekend away!
